Martha (Carter) Murphy

Mother Martha Murphy (Carter), 87, of Ironton, Ohio died in her Columbus, Ohio home, on August 7, 2018.

She was born on May 1, 1931 in Ironton, Ohio to William and Hazel Carter. Martha was a pillar in the community and shared a passion for motherhood both spiritually and physically. In addition to her nine biological children; Martha also adopted eight children, and opened her home to countless children, and adults, along the way. She was awarded the WSAZ hometown hero for her extensive history as a local cornerstone , in which she dedicated her time and love to more than 500 children in the nearly 40 years she dedicated to being a foster mother. Martha was an active and dedicated member of New Jerusalem Christian Center of where she served as a spiritual Mother to Bishop Kenneth Lisath and congregation. Martha will be remembered as a phenomenal mother, a wonderful woman, a church pillar, and a caring spirit throughout the community.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son; Scott Carter, step-mother ; Mawde Carter, three brothers; Mckinley and William (Coty) Carter, Phillip Carter, and a sister; Margaret Ann Carter.

Martha is survived by her children, Bethany (Yolanda) Carter, LaTonda (Daryl) Beatty, LaRondo (Dana) Carter, Calvin Carter, Brian (Alesia) Carter, Roxann (John) Sudderth, Shahara (Mark) Elswick, Nina (Daniel) Carlisle, Julia Murphy, Tara (KC) Jones, Marcus Murphy, Daniel Murphy, Kimberly Murphy, Maurice Murphy, Jared (Whittney) Murphy, Andre (Jessica) Murphy, Antonio (Leslie) Murphy. Four brothers; Pastor D.C. Carter and his wife Barbara of Burlington, Ohio, Pastor Richard Carter and his wife Darlene of Ironton, Ohio, Pastor James Carter and his wife Earnestine of Austin, Texas, Joe Carter of Columbus, Ohio, 2 sisters; Bertha Freeman of Columbus, Ohio, and Hazel Richardson of Portsmouth, Ohio as well as she thought of as her own: Otis Jennings, a host of foster children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. 

 A celebration of life is scheduled for Monday August 13, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Triedstone Baptist Church located at 615 Depot Square Ironton, Ohio 45638.with a reception to follow at New Jerusalem Christian Center fellowship hall. Pastor Richard Carter will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Martha’s life. Flowers and condolences can be sent to the Church.
